From epic series to enchanting standalone tales, these books promise to transport you to realms filled with mythical creatures, powerful magic, and unforgettable adventures.
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series by Sarah J. Maas
The A Court of Thorns and Roses series, where faeries, magic, and romance intertwine was a surprising adventure. The books follow the journey of Feyre Archeron (and her sisters) as she navigates the complexities of the fae realm, facing challenges, love, and peril. I read all five existing books this year: A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, A Court of Silver Flames. After the first book, the rest get a little more saucy than I like, but if you’re into that, this series has it for you. Fans of this series seem to be super-fans. So, if you start, you should plan to commit a serious amount of time to reading, contemplating, searching for fan art, and arguing (figuratively or literally) with other readers. :)
Lies We Sing to the Sea
The allure of Greek mythology intertwines with this intriguing tale, but the narrative’s unnecessary length and repetitive nature may test your patience. Dive into this story with an appreciation for mythology, but be prepared for a slower pace.
The Sun and the Void
Immerse yourself in a unique blend of fantasy with The Sun and the Void, where an interesting narrative unfolds, creating an imaginative experience of monsters and magic.
When Women Were Dragons
A novel about not holding back, becoming who we want to be, research, mystery, gaslighting, and toppling the patriarchy — all swirling around the “mass dragoning of 1955.” There’s a lot in this book.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Dive into the prequel of the Hunger Games series with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, offering insights into the early days of the Hunger Games and the complex character of President Snow. I enjoyed the movie, but found the book more useful for understanding the characters.
The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic
A family curse, twins with magic, unwelcome visitors. This novel weaves a tale of drama and magic in an enchanting narrative that combines the fantastical with the emotional.
The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrel
Take a journey of romance, adventure, and giggles with this tale of lady scoundrels, pirates, and flying houses. Though it may take a while to fully engage, the whimsical elements make it a delightful read.
The League of Gentlewomen Witches
This book is a departure from the first in the series (above). If you read the first one and wanted more heat – this one gives it to you right away (it is not the slow burn described). If you like the whimsical magic of the first book, but want more focus on passion, this one could be for you.
The Dark is Rising
Step into a world where ancient forces and prophecies unfold in The Dark is Rising, a classic fantasy novel that weaves a timeless tale of good versus evil.
The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye
Explore magical realms and encounter mystical creatures with this enchanting novel. The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye promises a journey filled with wonder, weaving a narrative that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
